Week 6 of Beeny Knows Best, where our very own Sarah Beeny takes to the blog to answer your property-related questions.
We own a 3-bed property in Wimbledon and have a 4 year-old child. We really like the idea of renting out our spare room to make a bit of extra money, but we're not sure who to rent it to, or how to go about setting this up..? - Sue, London
You obviously need to do your checks and references on anyone who might be interested but there are various great websites such as www.fivenights.com or www.mondaytofriday.com that are a great solution for a family such as yours, as they are used by people who want to rent rooms only during the week, so you'd still get the weekend to yourselves!
My partner and I have just got back from a week-long Christmas vacation and we came home to find that some of our clothes had small mould spots and our window-panes had gone soggy. This is the first time this has happened, and the only thing we can think may have caused it is that we didn't have the heating on at all during the time we were away. We're going away again in a month's time and want to make sure this doesn't happen again.. what can you suggest? - Catherine, Manchester
This is caused by condensation - the mould spores are in the air all the time but need the right conditions to germinate and grow. I would suggest you leave the heating on low and ideally have a few windows slightly open to create a bit of ventilation. It's a combination of ventilation, insulation and heating that stops this from happening.
If you have a question that you'd like Sarah to answer in next week's post, email it across to email@example.com with the subject line 'Beeny knows best'.
