A bungalow is a single storey house that isn’t very common or very popular in the UK due to its high price-to-space ratio. Single story homes, or bungalows, are very popular in countries that have a lot of space for property development, such as South Africa and Australia, because they often come with larger plots of land. However, in the UK, and particularly in London, which sports some of the most expensive property in the world, it is more common to see terraced housing. Bungalow living does have its advantages, however, so if you are interested in a bungalow, you should look at buying in London’s more modern areas, such as Putney.
Why consider a bungalow?
Bungalows are an excellent option for retired people or people with limited mobility because they offer easy access (no stairs). They are also easy to modify, as you can add a second storey or expand laterally at a later stage. Another distinct advantage is that they are normally either detached or semi-detached offering excellent privacy. They do, however, come at a premium when you consider the cost per square metre, because they offer fewer rooms for the same size plot.
Before buying a bungalow
If you are considering a bungalow, keep the following in mind:
Are you planning to extend? Then ensure that you will be able to obtain the necessary planning permission beforehand.
Are you considering a loft conversion? If so, you will lose storage space, so keep that in mind when deciding how much storage space you need.
Are you looking for a large plot? Bungalows often come with large plots and if you have not found the right house yet, it might make sense to buy a bungalow and consider extensive renovations.
Do you enjoy open plan living? Bungalows are ideal for modern open planning living, which allows you to work with light to give the illusion of more space
Do you need an accessible environment? Bungalows will be easier to convert into a wheelchair-friendly environment than a terrace house, for example.
