Save Thousands by Selling your Property Online

Interior designer Marie Kalsi reckons she saved a staggering £20,000, avoiding High Street estate agents' hefty fees by using an online-only agent.

She says: ‘I researched the local market and saw that places were selling within days. Neighbours were agreeing sales before their agents had put details online, let alone in their windows. I decided that if properties were selling themselves I might not need an agent at all.’

But Marie, 40, who was hoping to get £850,000 for her three-bedroom maisonette in Battersea, South-West London, realised she did need to get her home seen on major websites such as Zoopla, Rightmove and Prime Location and needed an agent to do it - even if they were online-only.

So she sided with an online estate agent, uploaded her details online and set up two open days for viewings, which she hosted herself. ‘I made it clear I wanted the asking price and I think the people liked dealing with me rather than an agent who didn’t know anything about the property,’ she says.

She showed the home to six people, received three offers and the sale was agreed within two weeks. At 2 per cent a traditional estate agent would have charged £17,000 plus £3,400 VAT.
