Our guide to planning and regulations
When extending an existing property ensure you have all the correct planning consents and building regulations in place.
You will need planning permission if you intend to raise the ridgeline or extend the original dwelling by more than 40 cubic metres in a terraced house, 50 cubic metres in other houses, or if you live in a conservation area or listed building.
Check building regulations: loft conversions need to be well insulated and have a safe escape from fire. Some rooflights are designed as emergency escapes.
