Our guide to lighting tips and options

A range of lighting options will improve the feel of your living spaces.

Central lights

You might not think a central pendant light is interesting, but you can buy stunning light fittings that transform a room. If the buyer likes it, they'll be willing to pay extra. If not, replace it with a standard plastic one and take it with you.

Fit dimmers in all possible situations, including bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchens. They are not expensive and create fantastic mood effects at the flick of a switch.

Wardrobes and Cupboards

Light up the insides of built-in wardrobes, closets and cupboards with a tiny sensor, so that when you open the door, the light comes on. It's a simple, low-cost trick which is both practical and luxurious and makes a home well-considered and pleasant to live in. It also means you'll tend to keep the cupboard doors neatly shut the rest of the time.

Electrical Points

Always build in more electrical points than you think you need. If there's a possibility you might want a side light there, put in a socket. It doesn't cost much at the time, but doing it as an afterthought can be horrendously expensive.
