How to Make the Most of a Small Property

If you have a modest sized home then it can be disheartening to think of all of the things which you would be able to do to it if only it were bigger. However, just because it is compact doesn’t mean that you should give up on the idea of improving it. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Make It Light Coloured

Light colours are great at making spaces seem bigger than they actually are. If your house is currently dark then this probably has the effect of making it seem more cramped than it is. Try light coloured wooden flooring and walls to make the most of your available space. If you aren’t sure what colours would work best then you could use sample pots to try out a few different looks.

Use Small Furniture

Using big, overbearing pieces of furniture is another thing to avoid. You are far better looking for smaller, lighter pieces of furniture which will help make your rooms appear more spacious. You might expect to have to look for expensive, custom made items but this is no longer usually necessary these days.

Be Clever With the Doors

Conventional doors can take up a lot more space than you might think. The space they occupy when open can be put to better use if you put sliding doors in instead. They are great for allowing you to get a bit of extra room around the place and look good too.

Get Mirrors on the Walls

Using wall mirrors is another clever way of making the house look bigger. There are lots of different designs around, so you will be able to find ones which fit in with your style of home no matter how you have decorated it. If you prefer pieces of art then look for light coloured paintings which make good use of perspective to give the impression of looking at something farther away than it is.

Avoid Clutter

Perhaps the simplest step to take is to tidy the place up. A cluttered house will always look smaller than it is, so you should always try and keep it as tidy as possible. This shouldn’t be too difficult to do once you get it all under control but getting started can be a problem. A smart move is to get some extra storage space sorted out, to make sure that you never run out of places to put your things.
