French doors, more correctly called French windows, are very effective at bringing the outdoors in. More traditionally, they opened onto the garden from the rear drawing room, but now they're a feature in many kitchen/dining areas.
They work especially well upstairs, opening inwards with a railing-cum-balcony outside. You can also fit sliding and concertina doors that open much wider than French doors would, bringing airy rooftop views inside.
