Driveways

Many front gardens have been concreted over and turned into off-road parking spaces - in the north-east of England almost half the front gardens are now paved. Buyers, especially in inner city areas, like their own parking space, so having a paved offroad front drive may slightly increase the value of your home. But be aware that concrete stops water draining through the soil and so the property may be at risk of flash flooding from run-off rainwater. Whenever you're laying a new surface, whether it's a long driveway or small parking space, it's best to use porous paving and sub-base to allow the ground to absorb water. If you want to minimise environmental impact, pave over the smallest area you can.
